My Thoughts & Reflections as a counsellor in Hampton
"We are our others, since each has left their mark upon us." (A, Caplan, 1992)
As human beings we are firmly embedded in networks of interpersonal relationships from the moment we are born. And through our interactions with significant others (parents or caregivers) we create our sense of 'Self', constructing our identities by initiating interactions with others or responding to them and then storing them as self-narratives in our memories. By remembering, reflecting and reinterpreting these memories of interactions with others we write a continuous script (self-narrative) by which we define ourselves. This is the representational Self - a constant reference point for knowing who we are. And in this sense the Self is a conglomeration of remembered interactions - we are our others, since each has left their mark upon us.
"Self-acceptance, means holding up the light to oneself and acknowledging one’s own shadow." (C. G. Jung, 1947)
Over time we may learn the rather painful and inconvenient truth that we're capable of being both good and bad. This means learning to accept the 'light' and 'shadow' side of our soul, rather than remain in denial. If we do not move towards a more open, non-defensive self-knowledge we are destined to surpress the unacceptable side of ourselves and project it onto others; blaming them for actions we cannot take responsibility for. In this way we allow our destructive impulses free reign and we are continually destined to find fault with 'them over there' and not 'us over here'.
"The most challenging journey we are faced with is the struggle to find a way of living with ourselves."
The most difficult struggle for human beings during their lifetime is how to learn self-acceptance.
"True strength lies in the power of acknowledging one’s vulnerability."
So many of us either judge ourselves as inadequate or weak, without realising it is with tremendous courage that we are able to acknowledge and accept our vulnerabilities and limitations.
"One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful."
"He that has eyes to see and ears to hear may convince himself that no mortal can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he chatters with his fingertips; betrayal oozes out of him at every pore."
"Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility."
Carl Gustav Jung
"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves."
"Nothing has a stronger influence psychologically on their children than the unlived life of the parent."
"The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed."
"As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being."
"My psycho-analytic work has convinced me that when in the baby's mind the conflicts between love and hate arise and the fears of losing the loved one become active, a very important step is made in development."
“The mother gazes at the baby in her arms, and the baby gazes at his mother's face and finds himself therein...provided that the mother is really looking at the unique, small, helpless being and not projecting her own expectations, fears, and plans for the child. In that case, the child would find not himself in his mother's face, but rather the mother's own projections. This child would remain without a mirror, and for the rest of his life would be seeking this mirror in vain.”

Accepting feedback shows a willingness to accept new ideas and responding appropriately; as well as invest in change for the mutual benefit your relationship.
